It has been written that “all the world’s a stage.” And, nobody lives this more effectively than our egos. The ego fancies itself a playwright, producer, casting director, stage director, and star of a play about itself. However, the ego soon experiences the challenge of getting every other actor to play his or her assigned role.
My life would be perfect if…
One of the ego’s favorite productions is titled, “My life would be perfect if it wasn’t for you!” The ego quickly becomes frustrated trying to get all the other egos to cooperate. None of them seems to realize they are supposed to do what our script tells them to do.
Our ego wonders, “Why does everyone else keep getting their lines wrong.”“Why don’t they take my direction?” “Don’t they understand their job is to simply read the lines I wrote for them?” “You would think they would be grateful for the opportunity to be in my play.” As silly as this sounds, it makes perfect sense to the ego.
Too many plots wear us out
The ego can only conceive of life as a play consisting of a long dream sequence. Our ego also has to deal with millions of other egos who are writing their own plays for everyone to follow. If all the world’s a stage, there are 7.6 billion different playwrights conducting plays worldwide.
When the ego writes a play, it usually takes the form of a tragedy, farce, or melodrama. These plays have some uplifting moments woven into the script, but always seem to include scenes of pain, suffering, or disappointment. If you are tired of watching variations of this same script, it is time to write another play and hire a new director. Fortunately, God applied for the job the minute you were born.
Write a new script
Today, begin the process of writing that new script. Compose as many scenes as you can imagine with joyful events, happy relationships, healthy behaviors, loving exchanges, and forgiving thoughts. It’s your play and the ego is no longer your director.
The affirmation “God and I are One” is your reminder that you are the playwright and God is your director. You will be amazed at how many others are looking forward to joining your troupe and enjoying your production.
